"Momma & 5 Newborns"

This rescue was an interesting one. Someone had reached out to me (in Yonkers, I believe) asking for help with a mom cat in her open garage who had just given birth the day before. The woman was able to see that one baby had already passed. It was freezing out in March, and I headed over there that day with a friend of mine to see what I could do. The woman had a cardboard box on its side, on the counter in her open garage, and that's where the mom had given birth. I was petrified that one would roll over off the counter, but people's hearts are in the right place. Mom cat was definitely feral, and she was immediately not pleased with my presence evaluating the situation. These babies were very cold, and it was important to get them inside as soon as possible. We were able to wait for mom cat to go into the box with the babies, and quickly block her in with a large tupperware lid. She was not happy, but it worked! I ran the box inside with mom cat and her babies, while holding the lid over the opening and getting them into the spare bedroom in the woman's house. Mom cat was freaking out to say the least, but she did eventually settle down. They were warm, and it was a quiet space for her to nurse and keep the babies safe. I had the sixth baby that passed away, cremated.

In the end, apparently the woman became overwhelmed a week later, and instead of letting me me know, she contacted a shelter and they took them in. All in all, I have no doubt that that babies found loving homes 8 weeks later at the shelter, and I'm happy that I was able to help them get safe and warm.
